VALIDATION

The narrative prior to the NCAA Tournament:

Virginia Tech wins the ACC Tournament – well, of course they do. The ACC is down this year. Notre Dame is the #2 seed and who have they beaten? Duke is fading down the stretch, beaten by Carolina at home in Coach K’s last game, defensive numbers dropping steadily in every game in the ACC Tournament, Syracuse pushed them to the wire without their best player, so of course they lose to Virginia Tech in the championship game. And Carolina folds the tent at the first sign of adversity, blows people out but then gets blown out, like against Virginia Tech, when the other team plays defense, and they don’t get the foul calls in their favor.

Then comes the NCAA Tournament. Only five teams make it in, all are underseeded, face tough competition from the start, and only Virginia Tech (!) doesn’t get a win, with 3 teams making it to the Elite 8 and 2 to the Final Four.

What does this all mean? The system for evaluating and selecting teams for the tournament is flawed? Obviously. But most of all, it means that:

VIRGINIA TECH WON THE TOURNAMENT OF THE BEST CONFERENCE IN THE COUNTRY.
