What you described though is why polls are so irrelevant in Basketball

an apt comparison is to Cinci in FB. Cinci had 1 good win all year (not a great win, ND had no good wins all year). Zags had a couple. But both played crap conference schedules and didn't lose. The way polls work, you don't lose you move up.

BB, they belonged in the tourney, though didn't deserve a 1, but that was proven. Cinci got into the final 4 without having an opportunity to be beaten by one of the 10 teams that could have beaten them.
