Unfortunately, you don't see how it got to that point

not an expert on navigation and all, but someone told me once that there are right of way rules and such (boat in this position etc). But I always felt there was a common sense aspect too...like the idea that a pedestrian has the right of way in a cross walk, only matters in charging the driver when the pedestrian who treats that as an absolute is dead from being hit by a car. A boat that size that gets t-boned by a freighter, may have had the right of way (don't know in this instance), but the freighter doesn't have brakes and takes a long time to turn, so it is in the best interest of the boat driver to avoid it's path.
