Really wonder if we overestimated the USSR capacity to take Western Europe

I believe, technologically speaking, we were way ahead of the Soviets in the 80's and 90's. I believe, technologically, they have caught up and potentially exceeded us, on a number of systems here recently. No doubt they have had the numbers on their side for a long time in terms total equipment and manpower.

However, there is no better trained organization that the US Military as a whole. Give the best soldiers the best weapons, and they are going to decimate much larger forces time and time again. Seeing the abandoned equipment and poor execution in combined arms maneuver in Ukraine, I think we make a mechanical graveyard in the Fulda Gap and don't stop The Machine until it's rolling through Red Square (if they were allowed to advance).

Of course, that's where NBC comes into the equation, and who knows how that would sway the balance. And I've go no illusions that the Soviets would have likely used nukes in the field.
