We MIGHT be able to get there with wind and solar
but only if NIMBY's agree to a shirtton of high voltage power lines running through their yard.
There is A LOT of wind and solar energy that could be harnessed in the midwest. I think I saw one study showing there was more than enough, and it wouldn't even require a significant change in land devoted to agriculture. The issue is, all that energy is needed on the coasts and you gotta get it there somehow.
High voltage power lines are no easier to build than pipelines. Nobody wants them anywhere near their property.
Coal, oil, gas, and nuclear plants can be built at the point-of-use and use short-distance transmission. But making energy is South Dakota to be used in New York is an infrastructure problem we can't handle right now.
