Anybody up for a nerdy NCAA unit discussion?

Been tabulating this total for a while to see how much money the ACC gets from the NCAA each year. For those that don't follow it, each team earns a unit for each tournament game they play in - except the championship game. So UVa has a max of 5 units from 2019 for example, not 6. Right now before the games start this week, the ACC has 5 units so far (Five bids, one guaranteed game each). Then those units are tabulated over a six year stretch. The NCAA pays out per unit. So for this year, the NCAA will pay the ACC for its 95 units from 2016-2021, at $338,847 for $32.19 million.

With the ACC distributing about $500 million in 2021, you can see the revenue from the tournament isn't a huge chunk. But it's interesting to see how it can go up or down. With 2020 being a zero for everyone, revenue will be down for the next few years. Combine it with current ACC performances the past couple of years with good years rolling off (2016) and the league will see declining money for a while.

Then finally, for individual teams, it's great to see VT climbing the ladder of late. Only Duke, Florida State, UNC, Syracuse and Virginia contribute more units. So yeah, pull for the ACC teams to win so VT gets more money. But in the end, pulling for Duke and UNC to lose late is perfectly fine and won't affect the money too much.
