But objectively put yourself in the owner/manager position. One metric for their compensation is amount the company/department produces per dollar spent. At some point, even if your are billing 100%, a guy further down the pay scale can bill 90% and still be more profitable. Why should they increase costs per unit produced?

I get it, to not be a Richard.

But if you work for someone, the moment you go from doing new things to doing your exact same job just a little more efficiently, is the moment that you set your top end compensation - maybe excepting commissions on sales type of thing that could fluctuate based on size of sale/volume.

IMHO, one needs to be consistently changing their skill set, or be happy with the top end of their pay scale (with defined commissions where applicable) or work for yourself. And your place along that spectrum will likely change as you get closer to retirement - as it should.
