To celebrate their 117th birthday, their Russian owner Roman Abramovich was sanctioned due to close ties to Putin, and all his UK assets have been frozen.

They weren't paid, but the North Korean government was paid for their services. So at best they can be considered an indentured servant workforce, and at worse slave labor.

Also, it is thought that Abramovich (who was close to Boris Yeltsin) recommended to Yeltsin that Putin be his replacement.
