His statement about Putin's genocide being "tough on both sides" was an infuriating way for such a close ally of Putin to describe the war. I don't expect him to take a stand like Panarin, but he has done nothing to distance himself from his close friend Putin or maintain neutrality like so many other Russian NHLers.

I hope we see rival fans dress in Ukrainian colors and organize anti-Putin chants wherever he goes. Describing Putin as a "bad apple politician" feels to me to be an insufficient characterization, I think "War Criminal" or "Genocidal Maniac" would be more fitting. Ovechkin and Varlomov(who has been wearing Putin TShirts saying "Crimeia is ours") can both go engage in the activity that the Ukrainians on Snake Island recommended.
