The price of a gallon of gas isn't dependent on things that are very

controllable.

The raw price of crude oil is about 3/4 of the cost of gasoline. Then add in refinement costs, transportation and storage costs, and then taxes. IIRC, profit margins for O&G companies on gasoline are well under 5%.

So basically, the cost of gas comes down to the price of a barrel of oil. And that is dependent on fear, misinformation, guesswork, and speculation moreso than actual supply and demand.
