Having studied pitching for the about 25 years I find Rochard . . .
to be pretty unique. She seems to pitch 'on the edge' a lot running up pretty high pitch counts. I think it's a product of the fact that she throws a greater variety of pitches than most premier pitchers. It's not a bad thing in that it limits opposing batters ability to 'zone hit' against her. It's also interesting that last season one in every six hits she surrendered was a home run. This would be alarming except for the fact that she surrenders fewer than five hits per game. I suspect having a veteran pitching coach like Gillis has been a key reason for her success. A less experienced coach might have had a difficult time dealing with her rather unique path to effectiveness.
