Not quite true. Hypersonics been around since x15 era. ICBMs are much fast


Faster at top end - just below orbital speed

Hypersonic is mach 5 to 10. Some hypersonics that exhibit non ballistic characteristics are tricky to negate.

Lots of engineering ongoing to figure how to keep scramjets lit for militarily useful duration.

Things like boost glide "lifting bodies", MIRVs and MARVs are pretty well known knowns from cold War days.
