I just assume that it is a change made to be more accurate to the


local pronounciation.

When I was a kid, Peking was the capital of China and Bombay was a big city in India.

Now we call them Beijing and Mumbai. I just think effort has been made over time to take names that exist in other languages/alphabets and do a better job when we convert them to the roman alphabet and when we pronounce them.

You can call that political correctness if you want, but I think it's just progress. If you are going to do something, do it right, or as right as you can given the differences in alphabets.
