So why would western media not use “Kiev”


They don’t use the typed words “Praha” when referencing Prague, or “Wien” for Vienna, or “Muenchen” for Munich. Heck they don’t say “Pear-e” when discussing Paris. Obviously cities/countries have differing spellings and pronunciations in the native tongue vs non-native.

I believe CapeAnnHokie has it right. Kyiv is Ukrainian while Kiev is Russian. For obvious reasons the former is preferred.
