Read a good article on deaths above the expected mean during the pandemic
They did not try and hash what is Covid, other deaths (overdoses, not addressing health needs, etc) or the fact that there were less deaths during the full lockdown because nobody was moving around, etc. This was in the Economist by the way. They are very much middle of the road,
Eye opening into the amount of excess deaths. They determined that the US is probably underreporting from looking at the statistics. But like I said, they did not try and look at the Covid versus other deaths so it is an overall number.
Figuring out worldwide becomes very hard as so many countries just do not have the infrastructure for the reporting. Conclusion, this damn virus has caused a lot of pain and death.
