I can understand thinking he needed a replacement given Brady's age.
The 49ers & Packers both replaced Hall of Fame quarterbacks as they approached 40. Their replacements are Canton-caliber also. The Steelers could've done the same years prior, but bypassed Marino because they thought Bradshaw had more left. In those three cases somebody special fell into a great franchise's lap. The Pats weren't quite as lucky as they were with that 6th round pick years earlier. Brady's quite an anomaly.
