We went 9-4 in the ACC, but didn’t play @uva, missed both fsu games, @unc, bc, louisville, and @ncsu. I could have easily seen us go 2-5 in those which would have put us much closer to .500, at least in the league, and closer to your formula above. So even last year, as good as our results were, we can thank to not being able to play our toughest games in a lot of cases.
