...guys along, and I know I've said this before, but the idea that Mike Young (who is a fantastic basketball coach) is somehow doing something so complex offensively that young players need a year or two to wrap their heads around it to contribute is message board myth. He didn't just play freshman at Wofford, he started them, including Storm Murphy.

I'm not making an argument on if he's playing the right guys or if the player development needs to be better or anything like that- but the idea that somehow there is something too complex in what VT does offensively for a freshman or a soph to grasp it just isn't true. I'd argue that in terms of retention of sets and counters (which is how Young runs his offense) Matt Painter runs more things and is more complex, they play freshman at Purdue. Chris Holtman has a similar offensive philosophy, he plays freshman. Even in read based motion and princeton systems (which I think is a lot harder for a young player at first) coaches get young guys on the court if they are the best players to help them win. You get enough practice time in college basketball to get someone ready to play in any offense, for most guys the biggest adjustment is what you are asked to do defensively and if a guy really can help you win you can eventually get over most hangups on that end by some point in their freshman year.

This isn't specifically a reply to your post, I just see that thrown around on here as accepted fact all the time and I just don't think that's true. There are plenty of amazing "system" coaches in college basketball succeeding with young players, and Mike Young himself has done it.
