If basketball were a 1:1 guard 1 player and 1 player only game...
Then youd have a point. Virginia Tech has gotten better as a group defensively this season with a better non-conference schedule than the team played last season. 4 of the 10 games have been against Power 5 or Top 25 opponents. This is not a bad schedule.
Alleyne, Cattoor, Mutts and Aluma all played with Bede too. So either everyone on the roster got way better defensively, or Bede and Radford as defenders were overrated.
Every single team in the ACC plays some cupcakes in the early part of the season. But VT has 4 players in the top 10 of DRtg for all of the ACC.
The defensive scheme MY employs is designed to not put players on an island to defend in space. So the need for someone like Bede or Radford is lessened. So their lack of offensive ability to stretch a defense only hurts the team in the long run and is magnified if you dont need them defensively.
VT lost Bede, lost Radford and are better in their defensive efficiency than at any point last season
