Ha! Thanks, Photo. While I don't generally find comfort in...
...others' misfortune, I do really appreciate everyone's encouragement not to get too down on myself. This has been a good reminder of humility - as much as I tend to think I have my act together and don't make stupid mistakes, this is a refresher in the reality than I'm no less fallible than any other human being. And, it's a good "teaching moment" with my daughter - she was in the truck with me this morning, and I immediately pointed out that this was a perfect example of why it's so important to not get distracted while driving. Thank goodness no one was hurt by my carelessness.
It's also an opportunity to practice what I preach. Recently, my daughter has been exhibiting some familiar signs of trying to be perfect and never make mistakes - something she undoubtedly inherited from the genes on my side of the family - and I've had several talks with her about accepting that she is never going to achieve perfection, and that it's not a healthy goal to have. I struggle with the same inner desire, so this is an opportunity to demonstrate how you can learn and grow from a mistake while also not beating yourself up. Wish me luck with that part...
