He’s not a fraud. He’s also not a football player though- and I think
that’s a big differentiator, and if we comment, we need to understand that lens.
I was catching up with another Army friend of mine last week, shooting the sh*t OG style and we were just talking about this. Here’s an example of what I mean-
Last week was the USMC birthday. Marines are really the only ones that care about their service’s birthday and honorifically celebrate it (IMHO)
The Navy knows all about the USMC birthday because the Marine Corps is part of the Navy- because that is a sibling rivalry, the Marines always remind their Navy “hosts” that it is the USMC bday. Whether they’re on a Navy ship or on a Naval Base, the Marines always ensure that special consideration is made for the USMC Bday, with a cake, etc., including all of the USMC bday traditions that go with it. This usually involves something like always bringing the youngest and oldest Marines together to cut the birthday cake? I’m a little foggy on this- I’ve been on USMC posts and Navy ships at different times over the last few years to see it firsthand, but only a Marine will remember all of the traditions and requirements.
In this case, Whit is the Navy. VT FB is the USMC. They’re like related, but Whit never went through Parris Island. He never experienced the crucible. He has no idea what Camp Geiger is, or Ft. Story, or ARS.
I’m definitely not in his head, but from an outside perspective, it could come down to him just not being naturally comfortable spending time, reaching out to OG VTFB. I don’t know. Hell, I think I could, and I would. It costs nothing to call up a player or two from the same SR class and offer them a ticket to a game (especially right now lol).
On the other hand, it may just be that there are so many things going on this season (Covid, coaching search) that he just can’t focus on outreach right now, especially if he cannot yet execute a specific strategy that he already has in the works, until the offseason.
That’s all I got.
Actually, was going to share another anecdote about a guy I’ve met who I do think is a fraud, who served as a Corpsman with Marines, and he’s the kind of guy who wears all this Marines crap and says he’s a Marine. But he’s not. I cannot understand why he just can’t be proud for what he actually did in the Navy, instead of labeling himself a Marine and believes the crap out of that. And goes around telling civilians he’s a Marine combat veteran. Friend of my girl so I just kind of step back from that.
People are people. What can I say.
