Here's the problem. He can't do enough to earn an extension at this point.
He has 3 years left. We are in no man's land, with regard to recruiting, which he hasn't done worth a damn as it is. Keep him, and other teams use the lack of commitment to him by VT, as ammo against a pretty weak recruiting staff.
Extend his contract, just because he might end strong would be, to quote Seth Greenberg, certifiably insane, because he's been nothing but long term mediocrity. But it's almost necessary for any sort of recruiting success.
If you can't extend him at this point, and you can't, he's gotta go.
Pretty much, a 3 year buyout is a cost of doing business, unless you just let the slide accelerate.
