Our route trees are horrendous and so easy to defend

It’s hard to examine our WR routes when watching the game on TV but in person I often closely examine our WR routes. On manageable downs (1st, 2nd, short 3rd), we typically have the out receiver run a longer route and the slot run a shorter pattern. This is fine in concept (QB only has to read one side of the field) but it’s astonishing how often they basically run the same routes - a go route and an out route). We hardly never challenge between the hashes. How many slant routes can you recall us completing in the past 5 years, how many skinny posts? It’s not that our QB is missing them, it’s that they are not being ran. On longer distance routes, we almost always run 3 vertical go routes. Just straight bombs. So easy to defend when you know it is coming. I almost believe our intention in running these routes may be for the QB to scramble as the D is stretched. The lack of variety in our routes and trees makes it very difficult for our WRs to get separation as most Ds are well prepared for the vanilla scheme that we are using.
