and having a non-football member can influence which direction the AAC goes in. A reason the AAC invited Navy to join as a football-only member is because the conference only had 11 members at the time and it wanted to host a conference championship game.

The AAC added Wichita State in 2017 to bring its total membership up to 12. From a scheduling perspective, 12 may be an easier number to work with than 11 because the AAC doesn't have to worry about 1 team have an open date on days when everyone is scheduled to play a conference game.
Also, by adding Wichita State the AAC may have now been eligible to receive an automatic bid to a NCAA Tournament for other sports (i.e. men's soccer, men's tennis, men's indoor track, men's outdoor track, etc) because it satisfied the NCAA's minimum number requirement for said sport.

FWIW Wichita State did sponsor football until 1986. It sounds like everyone wants to see Wichita State sponsor football again. Heck even Wichita State spend money on how the school could revive the sport, "WSU president John Bardo even commissioned a $69,000 study into reviving the sport." It appears the only thing preventing Wichita State from reviving its football program is that no one has come up with a good financial plan to revive the sport.
