Hokies almost have to be sarcastic or humorous about our programs because we have a legit complex. It protects the heart that wants to jump in with both feet, buy season tickets, attend every away game we can, buy a condo in Blacksburg, and sink thousands into Hokie Club. As soon as something good happens, it seems to be countered by something negative. Both football and hoops are affected. We've been burned by high expectations. Not losing to Duke at the buzzer in the Sweet 16 bad. Losing to Duke in Lane Stadium under the lights badly, bad. Most people unreasonably expected success to be linear and it never is. Frank had some cringey, awful and embarrassing moments. He started it but we loved him like a father so we beared it. With the increase in spending and high octane offense expectations with Fu, we thought we were finally going to break nepotism and get this program into the top tier. That coincided with an arms race that left us in the dust. And Fu having zero charisma, a toxic locker room, higher attrition than most programs, and watching our vaunted defense and special teams turn soft AF. The hype of our recruiting and marketing sold us, only to see we were fooled - bigly. DD wasn't happening, TX2VT wasn't happening, 757 wasn't happening. UNC isn't top tier yet they step in and prove it can be done with an old goat in puke blue uniforms. Overall, we're just not a great program and the product on the field makes many people sad. Sad people tend to want to wallow in their misery. We're sad.
