Their contract is worth a lot and a big portion of that value likely comes from the fact that they have huge fan bases.

But looking from just a football perspective, in the past 20 years, the B1G has only sent one team (Ohio St) to the National title game. They won 2 and lost 2. The more formalized that the national title game has become over the years, the less impact the B1G has had. I will note that Mich State did make the playoff in 2015 (where they got destroyed by Bama in the first round).

The B1G football is having a drought as well and they need something new to help them stay relevant as a whole.
