That seems like a hard needle to thread...


IMHO, a very competent XC racer and reasonable downhill bike are two very different animals. I would say a good trail bike can double as reasonable/good downhill bike, but still won't keep up with a good XC bike.

In the last couple years I sold my Trek Fuel EX and ended up buying a Kona Process 134. Definitely a step up, and even though my travel increased slightly both front and back, it climbs and is all around quicker than the Fuel. Although I miss the Fox Reactiv shock.

If you want a shorter travel bike that can still go downhill, maybe take a look at the Ibis Ripley? I considered it, but I wanted a bit more rear travel. Still, that bike is supposed to be fun as all getout. If your price range is in the Top Fuel 9.8 range, the Ripley is around the same. Maybe worth a demo if you can find one.
