Here's what's really different about that UNC deal...

(Disclaimer: I'm in over my head when it comes to NIL. Correct me if I'm wrong.)

Most of what I've read about NIL so far is that the athletes can market themselves, but cannot represent the school or the team when doing so. Dax Hollifield could say, "Hi, I'm Dax Hollifield," but he can't say, "Hi, I'm Virginia Tech linebacker Dax Hollifield" while sporting a VT shirt. Or so I had read.

The UNC deal is different: "The Tar Heels, who announced the arrangement on Tuesday, partnered with The Brandr Group to allow all athletes to profit from NIL in conjunction with UNC's official trademarks and logos."

More: "In theory, UNC fans will be able to buy a Sam Howell or Caleb Love jersey, and Howell and Love will see some cut from the sales. Point being, it's a big deal, and the fact that North Carolina is the first major school to engage with NIL this way will pay dividends on the recruiting trail."
