I hate this expression but there's a lot to unpack here (very long)
First let me say that if the SEC pulls this off, major kudos to them. Getting two of the top ten programs of all time is seismic. They will have created some major distance between them and the Big Ten.
There is some hope that maybe this falls through. Remember these schools were basically hours away from joining the Pac 10 a decade ago, when they pulled the plug at the last minute. OU and Texas could face political issues within their borders (Texas Tech and Okla St). Also A&M may be able to get enough votes to block them?
But realistically it's most likely going to happen. The next question is what do the other conferences do? If they do nothing, then I would assume the Big 12 takes a number of G5 schools to have the fifth best conference. This revamped Big 12 would be better than the Big East of late 2000s.
But if other conferences decide to take the leftovers then it gets interesting. Would the Big Ten want Kansas with all of their problems. Or Iowa State? Does the Pac 12 take three or four of the other central time zone schools? What happens with Baylor and TCU? I think the worst case for WVU would be if the Pac 12 does expand with four schools, then we are in the American.
I don't expect the ACC to expand until the Notre Dame issue is completely resolved. Most WVU fans think the ACC will take us but I highly doubt it.
Personally I'm not going to worry about it. We won three BCS bowl games after the ACC gutted the Big East.
