I dont think it has anything to do with Mike Jones. As hyoed as we all are for it, its still an unproven commodity at VT (just as any hire wouldve been), so pigeonholing yourself into a succession plan this early wouldnt be a prudent move.

What IS a good move however, is locking up your coach who has done wonders in 2 years, but looks to do even bigger things by 2 years from now. Negotiating 2 years from now would likely cost VT more dough. I think 6 years is enough of a buffer to both say "lets re-evaluate in 3 years" and also tell recruits "he isnt going anywhere"

Good move for all parties, MYs recruiting is a tad easier (not much) and Im sure VT saved some money compared to if they had done this at a later date.
