much an intimidating DEFENSE can change the entire complexity of a game or a season or a culture. I don't think he "gets it" even while he had Bud. I think TCU had a good D at one point when he was there, but he was offensive coach so probably didn't pay attention to D. That is what I miss most about VT football, the dominating D (and punt blocks), even more than the wins. CJF is offensive minded so if he's thinking if we had a better offensive run game, yeah of course it helps the D, but that has no bearing on making a D intimidating or dominating. And if he meant stopping the run, then yeah of course that'd be nice, but again does that mean dominating...No. To have an intimating D, you need to recruit strongly on D and coach them much better than what we've seen last few years. CJF is too focused on O recruiting IMO (too many OL, WR, RBs, and while I'm glad to have more OL, the WR/RB #s are just ridiculous. Give me 2-3 stud RBs and that's all you need. RB by committee is/was bad idea, and usually a result of not having a stud RB. It also turns out to be kind of a self-fulfilling prophecy - when you use a RB by committee, then stud RBs won't want to play for you anyway if they won't get all snaps, so you kind of shoot yourself in the foot. Maybe he learned something from having Herbert last year....but I doubt it.
