didn't want my kids dealing with any uncertainty or hassle, nor my wife if I kick first (which is likely if she follows through on her threats to hold the pillow over my face until the kicking stops). It cost about $1600 but includes all the medical directives, creation of a trust, and tons of flexibility so the kids wouldn't inherit a lump sum. They would get a percentage of their inheritance as they hit certain ages.

I hated writing that check but in hindsight very glad that I did.

It is also important to have someone (executor of your will perhaps) who knows where all of your paperwork is stored as well as all of your accounts/passwords, etc. I have all that documented and locked in a safe and I update it every year or two.
