It should (probably will) be all about the objective
Sorry I'm a little late to this discussion ... or a little early if we aren't fully diving in until August, which probably makes sense with all the moving parts. So consider this a preview.
I realize my subject line about the objective being key may seem rather obvious, but it really isn't. There are numerous objectives like (a) building the best team, long term; (b) maximizing the talent in the room and giving everyone some opportunities (or else you could lose guys and depth); (c) allowing individual wrestlers to take a redshirt year to develop further, gain more perspective and frankly just enjoy college a little more; and (d) going all in for one massive podium push. There are probably others.
So I'll tee this up for August: With just a couple years of Mekhi and Hunter left (serious top of the podium threats) and Korbin (last year) and others who are getting there - like Sam and Bryce and Catka (a little further off) - should the objective for the next two years be "all in" on reaching the top of the podium? That means some of the other objectives take a back seat.
Its my personal feeling that - unless you are PSU (the Alabama of wrestling) where every year might be "that year" - you need to decide when its the right time to go all in for the top of the podium. I think the next two years are the right time for the Hokies. You can't get there without a couple of National Champions, probably at least 6 total AAs, and several of those other AAs advancing to the semis.
I think the next two years present the best opportunities for the Hokies. And filling in weaker spots with one-year transfers suggests that Robie is thinking that way too IMHO.
