The ACC's decision to play 36 games was worrisome when the schedule
was announced at the start of the year. Spoke with three different coaches (not all head coaches) within the league, and one former coach in the league (ironically his new school is in the tourney) and they immediately said this is going to work against the league. Well.....the league office did not do the schools any favors this year. That decision probably cost the league a NET three bids.....Of the four major baseball conferences (Big 12, SEC, ACC, and PAC 12), the ACC played 6 more regular season games........with the BIG getting three bids, and one of those schools getting in with a RPI of 88, strength of schedule was not consistently rewarded. That league had one top 50 team, and of the three teams that got it, there were only TWO top 50 wins total between the three of them. Maryland and Michigan beat Nebraska once giving them their two wins.....The BIG should not have been rewarded for being the only conference to elect to play no out of conference games. Not to mention the BIG was the 11th best league RPI wise.......The combination of Pitt (17 top 50 wins), VT (12 top 50 wins), Clemson (8 tope 50 wins), and Louisville (13 top 50 wins--including an ooc win against Vandy) were sitting on the sideline. One could argue all four of those get in with a 30 game schedule.....The league knew it would unfairly wear schools out at the end. Again, it probably cost the league schools a net three more bids......
