Not sure what to pay?

I have a handyman who lives in the area.and he has done really quality work here in Central Virginia. The job is not a big one but here goes:

He is taking down 10 shutters (20x63) sanding and painting. Of the 10 he is replacing 5 of them with new.shutters and painting those. I am buying the paint and shutters. Is 45-50 per hour fair or should I pay him by the job? say $300-350?

If he gives me a price what should I consider fair? I usually do most of my own work but I'm having back issues (sciatica)
