I think we are witnessing the common condition where people point fingers at those next to them, telling them to "step up" but I think you are right. This is going to have to be something where a large group of alumni "step up." That is not to imply that many haven't already done so. I know many on here have; however, others are playing the chicken and egg game, wanting to see success before committing money. I get that. When you see a program trending in the wrong direction it is hard to want to give hard earned dollars to it. This points back to my original thought. If there is a sign from the school and some of the few well-heeled alumni that there is commitment to being a top 20 (or top 30) program, then I think others will follow with the numerous smaller donations that can make all the difference.
