Some statistics re the VT pitching coach debate...
In 2019, the last complete college baseball season, VT pitching finished second in earned run average among Atlantic Coast Conference teams, better than 12 of 14 baseball-playing teams in overall play. It was the best staff ERA at VT in the ACC era, and best since 1984.
The 2019 VT pitching staff gave up a batting average of .241 for the season. Only two teams had a better batting avg pitched against opponents, and one of those was just one percentage point better, at .240.
That VT staff gave up fewer hits than innings pitched, struck out 1.2 batters per inning pitched.
Ian Seymour and Chris Gerard were among the ranked leaders of many ACC pitching stats categories. Gerard had the second lowest ERA (2.45) and fewest homeruns allowed (1).
Two pitchers from that staff were selected in the 2019 MLB draft.
The pitching coach was Ryan Fecteau.
Pasted from his bio at Hokiesports.com:
"Prior to his arrival in Blacksburg, Fecteau spent just one season with the Terrapins, but made an immediate impact as he helped pitchers Brian Shaffer and Tyler Blohm receive national recognition. Shaffer was the Big Ten Pitcher of the Year and an All-American, while Blohm was chosen as the Big Ten Freshman of the Year and a freshman All-American. Four Maryland pitchers, including Shaffer, a sixth-round selection, were chosen in the 2017 MLB draft.
"During the 2017 season at Maryland, his staff ranked first in league-only games in the Big Ten Conference with a 3.61 ERA, and the team’s overall ERA of 3.98 was 61st in the nation. The Terrapins also finished in the top 60 in the country in five other pitching categories - 22nd in both walks allowed per nine innings (2.99) and strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.81), 43rd in WHIP (1.32), 58th in strikeouts per nine innings (8.4) and 60th in shutouts with four."
