That's what universities in Mexico and some other countries do.

Pumas soccer team owned by the National Autonomous University of Mexico. (Maybe the largest university on the planet, depending on who's counting.) The stadium the Pumas play in is on the UNAM campus.
Tigres owned by the Autonomous University of Nuevo León.
Leones Negros (lower division) owned by the University of Guadalajara.
