I am actually serious. If we make them paid athletes why even pretend ?

You take the top 64 Football/basketball schools and create a College Minor League. Only HS grads to 23/24yr olds can play. The athletes can choose to take the money they earn and attend school for an education or not. They would be responsible for their own housing and taxes on those earnings. If they are really elite, they can go to the NFL/NBA when those leagues want them. They can also get endorsements, etc. I would also set a salary cap like a real pro league does to balance the playing field.
