VTDante nailed this answer

Based on their great run of top 10 finishes, VT has been in the running for lots of top 10 guys at every weight for at least the past 5-6 years. But before Mekhi, there was that nagging blank spot on the trophy shelf, and I'd imagine a lot of top1-5 guys might prefer to choose a place with a track record of producing national champions. With Mekhi's breakthrough and with so many VT guys now appearing in the top 3 spots, I think we are in the running for everyone now.

VT and NC State would no longer be unexpected choices for a number 1 or 2 ranked HS wrestler.
