A few minor differences between high school and college

1. College wrestlers can earn a riding time point (controlling opponent for over a net difference of 1 minute during a match).

2. First period in college is 3 minutes vs. 2 for HS.

3. Near fall points are now different. It is 2 or 4 in college. And 2 or 3 in HS.

I don't know much about Olympic wrestling. Except that that there are two categories (freestyle and Greco-Roman). Freestyle is closest to college wrestling, but not quite the same.

As far as learning more, I think it's best just to watch matches. You'll pick it up. Maybe a referee manual or rule book might help. The hardest thing to pick up on at first is who has control. Sometimes it will appear someone has control and the other wrestler is in trouble, but it isn't so.

I live in Pennsylvania and we have great high school wrestling here. The state championships are outstanding. It is my favorite high school spectator sport. I'd suggest going to local high school matches in your local area. Often if you sit near someone who seems to know the sport, they can talk you through a match in a way that helps you learn. Enjoy.
