That's been exactly my opinion.

I would have to watch a soccer game with no offsides rule to really understand why it is necessary, I'm guessing the game would turn into a back and forth track meet or you'd always have to leave a guy or two back with the goalie, that is, doing nothing for half the game and meaning you'd have two more defenders than attackers making it REALLY hard to ever score between two equal teams.
