These games were big because they mattered for standings and rankings

in addition to the rivalry.

When Nebraska-Oklahoma was a big game, it was because a Big 8 title, an Orange Bowl birth (when the Orange Bowl meant something), and in many years, a national title opportunity were on the line. Sorry, it won't have the same gusto as it once did unless the games matter.

The past wave of realignment (since 2003) crapped all over rivalries and they won't easily be rekindled by meetings that don't matter for the standings.

If the CFP ever becomes champions-only and every major conference gets a bid, then they should just bag OOC games. Make conferences and divisions big enough to handle a full slate of 12 games and let the four champions have a tournament. If we stay at five conferences, then we need an 8-team bracket (which is too many games for some), or someone gets left out (which is a crappy plan).

My general view is that conferences either need to get larger or smaller (both in the size of the conferences, and the amount of conferences) The current size and schedules isn't what is best for the sport.
