Elvis & Bowie is an interesting comparison

Both shattered taboos & pushed boundaries. Both had distinct images/personas over their careers. Both did various genres of music and followed different trends. But their audiences were totally different. Elvis was definitive of USA pop culture, Bowie definitive of UK. And Elvis was a hero to some of the most socially conservative music fans, whereas Bowie was a hero to the counterculture, weirdos & outcasts, gay & bisexual people et al.

Personally, I love Bowie. "Ziggy Stardust" is like the soundtrack to the greatest musical ever. "Low" and "Heroes" expanded my mind in college. I never was an Elvis fan, although I do like this album cover (compare to my avatar of course...)
