First Match Thoughts

Final Score wasn't very close, but I was impressed with Campbell. They have kids who wrestle very tough, and some are pretty explosive. I think they would solid in the ACC, Kolat did a great job recruiting there.

125- Latona looked very good at times, and like a freshmen at other times. Needs to finish the takedown at the end of the second period and not let the guy get to the edge of the mat. Very impressed with how he looked on bottom, and on top (I wasn't expecting him to be a great top guy due to his freestyle and neutral prowess but he rode tough. His high crotch is devasting. Prata looked good in his exhibition-great on top still and had some nice takedowns. 125 is in very good hands.

133- Myers with a workman like win. Very smooth opening takedown. The Campbell kid is tough-and looks like a huge 133. Wittenberg in the exhibition showed some potential-but looks like a small 133 right now and the Campbell 133 like I already said appears like a big 133.

141- Hillegas is a hammer on top. People who followed his high school career already knew this, but man is the kid tough on top! Impressed with how he responded to giving up an early takedown, and his takedown was nice with a clean finish. Impressed with his variety on top-he can throw legs, is great with an arm bar and obviously has a good cradle. He was solid in his second match also-needs work on bottom like most freshmen though.

149- Andonian did what he does-fast start and was exciting as anything. Little concerned that he faded pretty hard in the second and third periods-some of the takedowns he gave up weren't off great shots, but Heil is a solid wrestler who might be an All-American. Also I think the second overturned call be nuts- I can buy not giving Andonian the first headlock early in the second period, but no way was Andonian in danger in the third period while he had Heil on his back. Didn't catch the 149 exhibition so I can't comment.

157- I thought Brady looked solid for a period, period and half maybe and then he faded also. His takedown was very impressive-super explosive, but after that he seemed to lose all energy and drive. Brady does look like a big 157, maybe the weight cut is having an effect or like others have said maybe its a lingering illness. I'm certainly still very high on Brady due to his athleticism but his performance Saturday does give some pause. Losing to Barton to is understandable early in the year-he's a former SoCon Champ and NCAA qualifier and has a ton of experience as a 5th year senior. But Brady's performance in his exhibition match was very concerning-couldn't get out on bottom, lack of offense, seemed out of gas early on. Ulrey I though performed well in his exhibition match-sad to see him cut his hair hair though. Needs to finish a little quicker but he pushed the pace in the match.

165- Mekhi Lewis looked like a National Champion should look-dominant. Would of liked to see him be a bit more aggressive on his feet and not just settle for counter attacks, but that is nit picking. He seems improved from the top position. I think his conditioning is also a little off-he didn't push for the tech after being up 10-2 and seemed to coast to the finish, but that could be by design of the coaching staff I dunno. Easy tech in his second match also.

174- Clark physically looks very developed and I really was impressed with how he wrestled in the second period to come back and tie the match. He was going on fumes in the third and had no attacks and barely any defense before giving up the takedown at the end.

184- Bolen was not Bolen. 4-1 after the first period and then gets ridden for 4 minutes. Never came close to giving up any back points but giving up points for riding time and stalling isn't a good look for the #2 kid in the country with hopes of winning a national title. His conditioning seemed very off-head was down on the mat early in the second period. I know legs are tough to defend, but seemed out of it. Illness maybe?

197- Andy Smith was impressive. I think he is still a few years away from a physical standpoint, but he was one of the only guys along with Latona and Meyers who seemed to wrestle strong 3rd periods. He got better as the match went on. Stan was also impressive in his exhibition.

285- Borst was solid. Didn't like the late takedown he gave up, but I understand him forcing things trying to get a major. The head and ankle was slick. Catka was dominant against the Campbell back-up. Looks like a future stud and is very big already. Catka vs Borst was fun to watch, have to imagine those two going at it in practice is very entertaining.

Overall a solid win. I think Andonian is due for a big jump rankings wise, and Latona might bump up a few spots as well. Only two things that are concerning right now are the lack of conditioning for most of the team (Is this due to recovery from Covid, early season form, nerves?) and the question marks at 157/174.
