Or get benefits, retirement. Would they be considered contractors?


I have no idea. For that matter, if an academic student's work leads to some sort of income generating development for the school (thinking a scientific device that can be sold, or something like that), does that student get any benefit like a cut of the profits? Seems similar and so perhaps there is precedent.
