In theory the plan could work, but I am not sure how feasible the plan


is on paper.

First, the G5s are pretty much divided up into regions now with the AAC being the lone exception.

Second, there is a lack of DI football schools in the midwest, so it is likely that Iowa State would find itself on an island in this new non-P5 conference. How is being on an "island" in a G6 conference better than Iowa State's current situation in the Big XII or the scenario of seeing Nebraska rejoin the Big XII?

Third, currently there are not enough non-P5 schools to create a new FBS conference and there are no viable FCS candidates that could switch subdivisions because they are not in a good financial position to absorb the additional cost.

Fourth, if Iowa State were to join either an existing non-P5 conference or a new non-P5 conference, then it is reasonable to assume that Iowa State would have an "unfair" competitive advantage over the other members. Given Iowa State's location, the MAC probably makes the most sense given that IA borders IL. However, a case could be made that Iowa State is "too big" for the MAC. A similar argument could be made for the Sun Belt and Conference USA too. Iowa State probably could "fit" the AAC's and MWC's profile, but the school would have to deal with an even worse "island problem" than what they currently deal with in the Big XII.
