The STS got us the ISS and the Hubble.

The Hubble got us virtually everything we've learned about the galaxy in the last 30 years, which is vast and extensive.

The ISS (and Mir before it) has allowed us to study quite a bit about the effect on the human body of weightlessness and exposure to space outside Earth's atmosphere on a long-term basis. All of this knowledge is an imperative prerequisite to sending humans out past the moon.

All that typed, yes we spent too much time in LEO, but now that private Companies are getting into the low-Earth orbit game, NASA can finally leave it alone and move on to more ambitious projects.
