The different rules paved the way for the leagues to play the game


differently. Historically, NL teams were better at playing "small ball" than their AL counterparts. The small ball vs. long ball was appealing to fans because the only time NL teams played against AL teams was in the World Series and the All-Star Game. When MLB decided to introduce interleague play, fans still found it appealing because the interleague games were only played at certain times in the schedule. Now that interleague games are played everyday, the appeal may be slowly fading away.
