It wasn't insane at all until they introduced interleague play


You had to have an even number of teams in each league or you'd have one team sitting out at all times. That's not feasible in the least. Once interleague play came along, though, you could have an odd number of teams because you could have the left-out team play interleague.

I'm guessing that we may even see two expansion teams in two years. With the potential increase to 16 playoff teams, it makes sense to get to 16 teams per league and split into four, four-team divisions. Then you'd have your division winners and four Wild Card teams and have easy first-round matchup decisions.

No idea how they'd set things up this year if they go with 16 teams. That'd involve three division winners and FIVE WIld Card teams. What's the bracket like for that?
